World Master Athlete Judo Championships

The 11th World Master Athlete Judo Championships were held in Atlanta, GA from August 19th - 23rd. Over 600 participants from around the world traveled to participate in this event.

Paul Tarrant, 5th Dan, Director of The Indianapolis Judo Academy, traveled to compete in this Masters World Championship.

Paul competed in both the Individual and Team competition. In the 50 - 54 year old, -90 Kg division, Paul placed 5th beating one former Olympian only to be eliminated by another former Olympian.

Yates Accepts Appointment as Third GMAU Chairman

The Gospel Martial Arts Union Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Professor Keith Yates has accepted the appointment of Chairman. Yates will be inducted as the 3rd Chairman of the Board at the Gospel Martial Arts Union National Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, scheduled for October 23-24, 2009.

Dr. J.R. Russell has worked with world-renowned Christian artist and sculptor Max Greiner as a weapons consultant for the past two years on a functional version of the “Sword of the Spirit” sword originally part of the massive 18 foot tall Coming King sculpture. Russell provided specifications for blade metal composition manufacture, specifications for pommel materials fabrication and construction, as well as final paint tones and patina for the finished product. GMAU Fencing - Purdue Spring Open Épée Tournament

On January 31, GMAU Fencing Academy students Alexander Ganahl, Andrew Semler, and Drew Myers competed in the Purdue Spring Open épée tournament, with all three fencers advancing into the second round of Direct Eliminations. Out of the field of 37, Ganahl placed 17th, Myers placed 29th, and Semler placed 30th. Over the past month, the Fencing Academy has greatly benefited from a Development Grant awarded by the United States Fencing Association. The grant money was used to purchase electric fencing equipment, which enabled our fencers to prepare for and compete in the tournament.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – GMAU Executive Director, Dr. J.R. Russell and GMAU Academy Directors Kevin Calhoun and Ross Moore made a trip from GMAU HQ in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Wyoming, Michigan (a suburb of Grand Rapids), on Saturday, January 31, to award GMAU certified instructor Bill Church with the title of "SOKE".

2008 US Open Judo Championships - Congratulations Paul Tarrant!

The 2008 US Open Judo Championships were held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO from September 26 – 28. There were over 300 competitors from around the world participating in the event.

After refereeing for this International Tournament for 2 days, Paul Tarrant competed in the 50 years Plus, -90kg Masters Division on Sunday 9/28 winning the Bronze Medal with a 2 – 1 record. He won the bronze medal match with an Ouchigari (Major Inner Reaping Throw) for Ippon mid way through the 3 minute match.

2008 Judo National Championship Results

Michael Tarrant

Michael Tarrant placed 3rd at the United States Judo Federation Junior National Championship which was held in Chicago July 4-6. Michael fought in the 11 & 12 year old, -34kg (under 75 lbs) division. He was the smallest competitor in his group. His record was 2-2.

2007 US Open Judo Champion

The US Open is the oldest and most prestigious international Judo championship sponsored by USA JUDO annually. This year the tournament was held in Norcross, GA on October 19 - 21. There were over 200 competitors from around the world at this event. The GMAU was represented by Paul Tarrant, 5th Dan Kodokan Judo, both as an international referee and as a competitor in the Masters Division. As a referee Paul was rated satisfactory and was able to renew his Pan American Referee License. Paul competed on Sunday afternoon and went 3-0 to win his division.
